Joyce Carol Thomas

    An internationally acclaimed poet, novelist, and playwright, Joyce spent her formative years in Ponca City, Oklahoma, before moving with her family to California.   She has received numerous awards for her work, most notably the National Book Award for her novel, Marked by Fire.  In a starred review, Booklist describes the story as “a lyrical celebration.”  In recent years, Joyce has focused on writing poetry of inclusion and outreach for young adults. One of her most recent titles, The Blacker the Berry, illustrated by Floyd Cooper, received a Coretta Scott King Award.  Some of Joyce’s other collections include such classics as I Have Heard of a Land and Brown Honey in Broomwheat Tea.
